Tips for Sober Travel

Sober travel, also called “dry tripping,” has grown in popularity the last several years and is expected to continue trending upward in the years to come.

Sober travel, also called “dry tripping,” has grown in popularity the last several years and is expected to continue trending upward in the years to come. A recent survey by Expedia reports that more than 40% of travelers are likely to book an alcohol-free trip in 2024.

People’s reasons for wanting to travel sober can vary widely – whether you are someone who is recovering from an alcohol addiction or someone who is “ sober curious” and considering cutting down on your alcohol consumption. Regardless of your reason for wanting to travel sober, it can sometimes seem like a bit of a daunting task, as drinking alcohol is often a common part of cultures around the world – like enjoying a glass of wine in Italy or sipping sake in Japan.

Traveling sober can have just as many perks, though. One of the biggest advantages to alcohol-free travel is having a clear mind and being aware of everything happening around you on your trip. This not only allows you to experience and remember your destination fully, but it can also help keep you safe by being more perceptive of your surroundings. Another benefit of sober travel is you can reallocate the money you would typically spend on alcoholic beverages and use it, instead, for a fun activity or a tasty dessert at dinner.

If you are someone who is looking to travel sober, it will be important to seek out destinations on your trip that will be accommodating to your desire to not drink alcohol but still allow you to experience the destination to the fullest. Places like zero-proof lounges and alcohol-free bars are growing in popularity, such as these top-rated non-alcoholic bars in the U.S. Even if your destination doesn’t have a completely alcohol-free hangout, many restaurants and bars are making mocktails a mainstay on their menus. Researching menus beforehand can ensure you will be able to still enjoy a tasty drink at dinner, minus the alcohol.

Another thing to keep in mind: your travel companions. If there are people in your life who are known to overindulge or you feel may pressure you into drinking alcohol, consider inviting a different friend or family member to accompany you. Regardless, make sure you clearly communicate to those traveling with you before the trip of your intentions not to drink alcohol and ask for their support during your vacation.

While any trip can be a sober one, there are certain activities or types of travel that especially lend themselves to an alcohol-free agenda. Whether you embark on a wellness retreat, a hiking adventure, or just visit a local museum at your destination, there are plenty of ways to travel and experience the world without a boozy beverage. And you may be surprised to find that you have such a good time on your trip, you don’t even think about having a drink.
