Effects of Wimbledon on London Travel

Tennis fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, set to take place July 1–14. Tennis fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, set to take place July 1–14, 2024. Since 1877, Wimbledon has been held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and is regarded by many as the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Players will don their traditional all-white attire as they compete in 675 matches played on 19 outdoor grass courts.

Purchasing Wimbledon Tournament Tickets

The only way to purchase tickets in advance is via a lottery, which has already closed for the 2024 games. Fans can still score a ticket on the day of play by waiting in The Queue for the opportunity to purchase tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Dedicated fans often line up the night before to ensure they get a seat, as Wimbledon attendance has increased in recent years.

More than 515,100 guests attended the Championships in 2022, followed by a record-breaking 532,651 guests in 2023. And if this upward trend continues, we could again see record attendance during the 14-day tournament in July.

Large Crowds Expected at Wimbledon

With thousands of patrons flocking to the courts each day of the tournament, heavy traffic is expected, and parking is scarce. Wimbledon officials encourage guests to utilize public transit and other sustainable forms of transportation such as walking or cycling if possible.

While the idea of large crowds at Wimbledon might deter some travelers from visiting London, several online travel forums advise that it might be wise for tourists to visit other area attractions during the tournament as lines may be shorter while tennis fans are occupied for the day.

And, although nearby hotels are likely to fill up earlier than usual, it’s still a wonderful time to visit London and experience all of the festivities. One tip when booking is to consider staying in Wandsworth, Putney, or Earlsfield instead of more expensive downtown options.

And, most importantly, enjoy your Pimms and strawberries and cream as you partake in this British summer tradition.
