IMG opened its doors in January 1990 in Indianapolis, Indiana as an independent managing general underwriter (MGU). With no established market for international insurance products at the time, IMG built a solid foundation by providing multiple innovative insurance, reinsurance, and international medical management programs.
In the 1990s, IMG focused primarily on the international medical insurance market, particularly by servicing numerous mission sending organizations. IMG became the first international company to offer a full line of global products, the first to mass market those products, and the first to offer complete and secure online transactions for international insurance.
IMG developed a domestic and international medical management services division, known as AkesoCare Management, to provide 24/7 assistance, worldwide access to medical providers, and international medical management.
Throughout the 2000s, much of IMG's business transitioned from paper to online transactions. To further improve the purchase, fulfillment, and service experience, IMG developed a multitude of online resources, including the MyIMG portal where members can easily access and navigate their account from anywhere in the world. Recognized for its excellent user experience and digital innovation, IMG's website has been named a Progress® Sitefinity™ Website of the Year in both 2017 and 2021.
In addition to IMG's technological successes, some of the company’s greatest growth occurred in the 2010s with the acquisition of Global Response, ALC Health, and iTravelInsured. Through these strategic investments, IMG became one of the only companies worldwide to offer travel insurance, travel medical insurance, international health insurance, and assistance and medical management services.
In May of 2017, IMG was acquired by their long-time global insurer and reinsurer Sirius Group who later merged with Third Point Re in 2021 to form SiriusPoint. SiriusPoint has continued to support and invest in IMG's mission to provide world-class insurance benefits and products.
As the world adjusted to living with COVID-19, IMG remained dedicated to providing its members and partners with the best international medical insurance and travel protection cover available.
As IMG's global workforce continued to expand, the U.S. headquarters moved to a new office in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Today, IMG continues its market-leading position by offering a wide range of insurance programs, including specialized programs for travelers, students, missionaries, marine crews, and any other individuals or groups traveling,
working, or living away from home.
